Drawing Workshops/Classes

Michael's drawing workshops are designed to foster creativity in both children and adults. In a corporate setting, the drawing exercises serve as an excellent team-building activity, helping to unlock your team's creative potential. In schools, colleges and youth centres, Michael aims to empower children to express themselves and approach new challenges with the unique confidence that creativity fosters.

 

Michael encourages participants to harness drawing as a method for simplifying complex challenges. Drawing is also proven to be an effective mindfulness activity with the potential benefit of calming the mind.

Clients can book Michael to deliver workshops at their premises, or he can conduct sessions online via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet.

The workshops

Caricature Workshop

 

1. Quick introduction - Michael will introduce himself and briefly explain what a caricature is. (2 - 5 minutes)

 

2. 'How to draw features' exercise. - Michael will break down how you can draw different parts of the face like the eyes, nose, mouth, ear and head shapes. Participants will draw along with him. (8 - 15 minutes)

 

3. Caricature drawing challenge - Michael will draw a person of your choosing  and participants will draw along with him. He will draw the face in simple steps at a speed that will allow participants to easily follow along and draw at the same time. (15 - 35 minutes)

4. Caricature Prize - Michael will select the top 3 drawings based on 3 categories. Best Likeness, Best drawing Technique and The drawing showcasing the most Flair/Creativity. Participants will then be asked to vote  for the best overall drawing from the top 3 selected drawings.  The winner will receive a detailed head & shoulders caricature drawn in colour by Michael. The drawing will be completed after the event and will be delivered to the winner by email. (2 - 5 minutes)

5. Live pen and ink caricatures  (For in person workshops only- Michael will make some quick pen and ink caricature sketches for some or all the participants. The participant can take these away with them. (4 - 5 minutes per sketch)

Online Caricature Workshops can last between 20 minutes and 90 minutes per session

In Person Caricature workshops can last between 30 minutes and 240 minutes per session

Word Sketch Workshop

1. Introduction to sketching - Michael will introduce himself and briefly talk about sketching and idea generation. (2 - 5 minutes)

 

2. Dream Sketch - Participants will be asked to make a sketch based on dream. The sketch can be based on something they dreamt about, a dream/goal they have or what their perfect day would look like. Michael will guide participants only with words. (5 - 15 minutes)

 

3. Group Word Prompt Sketching - Michael will present participants with 3 columns of words. The first column will include nouns, the second will be verbs and the final set will be nouns again. 1 word will be drawn from each column to create the idea for the sketch. Michael will make sketches based on the chosen words and will talk through his thought process as he is building his idea. Participants will either draw along with Michael's or choose to generate their own idea based on the same group of words. (8 - 30 minutes)
 

4. Individual Word Prompt Sketching - Participants will choose 2 words from the nouns columns and 1 word from the verbs column. They will then create their own masterpieces based on those words without direction from Michael. (5 - 15 minutes)

5. Sketching Prize - Michael will select the Top 3 masterpieces and participants will then be asked to vote  for the best overall drawing from Michael's selection.  The winner will get a detailed personalised caricature drawing by Michael which will be completed after the event and delivered to the winner by email. (2 - 5 minutes)​

Stop Motion Animation Workshop*

1. Introduction To Stop Motion Animation - Michael will introduce himself and talk about stop-motion animation. Michael will show participants some of his stop motion animations.  (5 minutes)

 

2. Preparing for animation - Participants will appoint people to different production roles. 

The Skecting team is responsible for drawing the characters and objects. 

The Builders Team is responsible for making the character and objects using playdough and cardboard.

The Animation Team is responsible for shooting the animation with a camera

The Post Production Team is responsible for editing photos and putting the photo frames together into an animation. 

(5 - 10 minutes)

2. The Sketching Team - Michael will work with The Sketching  team to draw the characters and objects which will appear in the animation. 

(10 - 45 minutes)

 

3. The Builders Teams - Participants will be given playdough, cardboard and tools to make characters and objects based on the sketches provided by the sketching team. (20 - 45 minutes)

 

4. The Animation Team - Stop motion animation is made by moving parts of characters/objects slightly and photographing each movement to create the animation frames. Cameras will be set up to capture several camera angles.  (20 - 45 minutes)

 

5. Post Production - The Post Production team will be divided into 2 - 4 groups. Each group will work on an iPad or computer to put the animation photo frames into a sequence.  The whole production team will then work together  to combine the scenes into a short stop motion animation.

How much time do you need to set up for the in person workshops?

How far can you travel?

Do we need to provide specific equipment or conditions to offer your service?

In person workshops - tables and chairs for participants. For the Caricature and Word Sketch workshops, each participant will also need 3 sheets of A4 paper and a pencil.

For the Stop Motion Animation workshop, I will need tables and chais for participants and I will bring everything else with me.

Online workshop - Online workshops can be conducted on Zoom, Google meet or Microsoft Teams. Participants will be sent a link to join the sessions. Each participant will need to have 3 sheets of paper and a pencil.

Absolutely, Michael can tailor his workshop is perfect for children as old as 3 and adults as young as 100.

Can you do one to one caricature drawing workshops?

Yes I can do one to one workshops for children and adults. Children under 16 years old will need to be accompanied by an adult for the full duration of the workshop. 

Do you offer reoccurring drawing lessons?

Yes I can offer reoccurring drawing lessons. My area of expertise are caricature drawing, watercolour painting, stop motion animation and Digital illustration.

How do payments work?

You pay a 20% Deposit to secure your booking. The remaining balance can be by bank transfer or card 3 days before the event. ​
